WFC2 defender joined by former Republic FC loanee Colvey

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 defender Deklan Wynne has been named to New Zealand’s squad for its upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying contests against Fiji later this month. Joining Wynne in the squad is the San Jose Earthquakes’ Kip Colvey, who competed on loan for Sacramento Republic FC in the 2016 USL season.

Wynne, who made 11 appearances across the 2016 USL regular season and USL Cup Playoffs for WFC2, has made six appearances in his career for the All Whites. The side will face Fiji in a home-and-home series in qualifying, with the teams set to meet on March 25 in Laukota, Fiji before the return fixture on March 28 in Wellington, New Zealand.

Four points from the two contests would send New Zealand into the final stage of qualifying, with the side having previously earned four points from its two meetings with New Caledonia last November.

“It is the best squad we have had since I have been here,” said New Zealand Head Coach Anthony Hudson. “We have got quality all around the pitch, we have depth and competition for places, and the best thing about this squad is we have a good blend of experience and youth. There is energy, quality and hunger in this squad so I’m very pleased.”

Colvey, who made six appearances for Republic FC a season ago, has made seven appearances for his country. The squad will assemble in Wellington, New Zealand on March 19 ahead of the first of the two contests in Fiji.
