RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC announced on Wednesday the club had signed midfielder Chris Wehan, pending league and federation approval. Wehan, 22, spent the summer last year training with the San Jose Earthquakes before he was invited on trial with Reno 1868 FC in February.
“Chris is a very young and talented player,” said 1868 FC Head Coach Ian Russell. “He was a prolific goal scorer in college and I believe Chris will make an immediate impact for our offense.”
Wehan joins 1868 FC after earning selection to the Conference USA All-Conference First Team in each of the past two seasons for the University of New Mexico. Last fall as a senior he led the Lobos to the Conference USA tournament championship, where he was named tournament MVP, and also earned selection to the NSCAA All-Southwest Region First Team.
As a Lobo, Wehan scored 31 goals in 80 appearances, placing him fifth in program history in goal scored and just outside the top 10 in appearances. Wehan also competed in the Premier Development League for the Sounders FC U23 while competing for the Lobos.
Wehan and Reno 1868 FC will take on Sacramento Republic FC Saturday, March 11 from Greater Nevada Field at 4 p.m. PT.
