2016 USL 20 Under 20 selection had winner in victory against Red Bulls

VANCOUVER, B.C. – 2016 USL 20 Under 20 selection Alphonso Davies scored the opening goal and played a role in the second as Vancouver Whitecaps FC advanced to the Semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory against the New York Red Bulls at B.C. Place.

The victory sent Whitecaps FC through 3-1 on aggregate, and into a clash with Liga MX side Tigres UANL in the next round. The first leg in Mexico will be held between March 14-16, with the second leg in Vancouver set to be held between April 4-6.

The 16-year-old Davies – who in 2016 became the youngest goal-scorer in USL history for Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at just 15 years of age – scored in just the fifth minute to give Whitecaps FC the lead. Davies calmly controlled a cross from the left that had jammed off Red Bulls defender Kemar Lawrence and slotted low into the left corner of the net.

New York – which saw 2016 USL Defender of the Year Aaron Long make the start at center back, and former Red Bulls II standout Derrick Etienne Jr. substituted on early after an injury to Gonzalo Veron – had the majority of possession, but was unable to find an end product as Daniel Royer’s two shots on goal proved the only major threats to Vancouver’s goal.

By contrast, Whitecaps FC threatened more frequently, and doubled its lead with 14 minutes to go when Davies sent a corner kick from the right into the penalty area. The delivery caromed off a defender and was driven home by new Vancouver signing Fredy Montero.

Davies’ goal was his second in the current edition of the CCL, after his goal against Sporting Kansas City in a 2-1 victory last September clinched a place in the knockout stage for Whitecaps FC for the first time in its history. Vancouver will now face the test of last season’s runner-up in Tigres as the quest for the championship continues.
