Williams Returns to Battery on Loan

Atlanta sends Charleston’s 2016 leading scorer, young midfielder Otoo to USL partner

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Thursday that its MLS partner Atlanta United FC had loaned forward Romario Williams and midfielder Jeffrey Otoo to the club for the 2017 season. The loans are pending league approval.

Williams rejoins the Battery after leading the club with 10 goals in 27 appearances on loan from the Montreal Impact in the 2016 USL regular season. Atlanta acquired Williams following his successful season via a trade with Montreal Impact on December 11th. The Jamaican center forward was the third overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Otoo signed with Atlanta United in June, 2016 and was immediately sent to Charleston for the remainder of the USL season. Otoo, 19, appeared in five USL games and the Battery’s friendlies with the Nigerian U23s and Rangers FC last summer.

Both Williams and Otoo have featured prominently for Charleston during the 2017 preseason. Williams scored the equalizer for the Battery in the side’s 2017 Carolina Challenge Cup contest against Atlanta last Saturday night, and had a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win against Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday evening.   

Williams and Otoo will be a key part of what Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser’s attack in the 2017 season.  The duo joins O’Brian Woodbine, Quinton Griffith, Forrest Lasso, Ataulla Guerra, Neveal Hackshaw, Justin Portillo, Maikel Chang, Dante Marini, and Taylor Mueller on this season’s roster.
