HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders announced on Wednesday the addition of midfielder Jonathan Mendoza to the club’s roster, pending league and federation approval. Mendoza brings four years of professional experience to Harrisburg, having played in the USL since 2013.

Mendoza began his career with Orlando City Soccer Club in 2013, and helped the Lions with the USL Cup that season before making the move to the Rochester Rhinos the following year. The Colombian was a key piece to the Rhinos' USL Cup victory in 2015, as he recorded the assist on Asani Samuels’ game-tying goal to send the game to overtime in the Rhinos’ 2-1 win against the LA Galaxy II.

Last season Mendoza returned to the Sunshine State with Orlando City B, for which he made 29 appearances in the 2016 USL regular season. Mendoza had two goals and one assist for OCB as he helped the side reach the USL Cup Playoffs in its inaugural season. He is now hoping to do the same with the City Islanders.

"I'm happy to be in Harrisburg,” said Mendoza. “After they [Harrisburg's management team and technical staff] explained to me where the team is going and the goals for 2017, I became excited and wanted to be a part of the club. I'm looking forward to this season. I met the players already and I'm excited for a new challenge. It is time to focus on making the playoffs and fight for the championship."

City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher is eager to see what the soccer veteran can bring to the club.

"Jonny is a guy who has been in the league for some time now,” said Becher. “He won a championship with Rochester in 2015 and we're excited to have him here. We think he can be one of the leaders on this 2017 team."
