SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Wednesday night at a SAFC Season Ticket Member event at Toyota Field it had signed midfielder and San Antonio native Maxi Rodriguez for the upcoming 2017 USL season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Rodriguez joins the club after impressing the SAFC coaching staff while on trial during the club’s preseason. The 21-year-old was born and raised in San Antonio and attended Warren High School where he was named the Conference Player of the Year in 2011. Rodriguez was also a member of Classics Elite Soccer Academy and was the captain of his USSF Academy team.

“Maxi is another San Antonio boy joining the club,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has worked extremely hard and shown well in preseason, and he comes from a good college program in UNC Charlotte. We are looking forward to seeing how he progresses this season.”

Rodriguez attended UNC Charlotte and played four years of collegiate soccer with the 49ers. The midfielder helped lead UNCC to a Conference USA regular season title in 2016 while also being named to the Conference USA All-Conference Third Team.

In his four years with the 49ers, Rodriguez helped take the 49ers to the NCAA Tournament three times. Overall, Rodriguez played 60 games with UNCC, making 53 starts, scoring two goals and recording four assists.

“I am super happy to join a club like San Antonio FC,” said Rodriguez. “After spending four years out of San Antonio and Texas, I am excited to come back and represent this organization and my home city. I can’t wait to get ready for the season.”
