CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy II midfielder Jaime Villarreal has been turning some heads so far this preseason as he competed with the club’s MLS squad, and on Tuesday continued to impress with the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the Galaxy against Real Salt Lake.

The Galaxy utilized a young lineup for the opening hour of the scrimmage, with Homegrown signings Hugo Arellano, Raul Mendiola, Bradford Jamieson IV, Jose Villarreal and Jack McBean – a USL All-League First Team selection last year – all in the starting lineup.

McBean played a role in Jaime Villarreal’s goal, holding up play before releasing Ema Boateng, whose cross was put home by the 21-year-old at the back post.

Jaime Villarreal led Los Dos in minutes a season ago, recording two goals and four assists, and he appears to have raised his level again judging by his performances so far this preseason.

“So far this preseason has been going well,” he told LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano. “This game shows that I’m showing good progress and I’m moving along well. The coaching staff believes in me.”

Other former Los Dos players like goalkeeper Clement Diop, defenders Dave Romney, Nathan Smith, Bradley Diallo and Daniel Steres and forward Ariel Lassiter also saw action. The performance as a whole pleased Galaxy Head Coach Curt Onalfo, as the side’s youngsters more than held their own against a more experienced RSL lineup before the club’s veterans played in the final half-hour.

“Both groups there was some real positive things in terms of moving the ball, so out of both groups, I thought that we were very good,” Onalfo told Serrano. “We need to continue to get sharper in the final third which is always the last thing to come. It was another day where we’re moving in the right direction.”
