BRADENTON, Fla. – Ryan Williams scored the game-winning goal as Ottawa Fury FC took a 2-1 victory against fellow USL side Saint Louis FC at IMG Academy on Tuesday night. Sito Seoane also found the net for Ottawa, while Saint Louis academy player Matteo Kidd notched STLFC’s lone goal.

"I think we played with a lot of intensity,” said Fury FC Head Coach Paul Dalglish. “It was our first real test, so it was important to win that game to breathe confidence going into the season, especially against the team that we are going to play in our first game of the season.”

Fury FC had the better of the first of three 30-minute periods, but the game remained scoreless as Saint Louis trialists goalkeeper Adam Grinwis kept Ottawa off the scoreboard. Late on in the period, Ottawa’s Onua Obasi was ejected, but the teams agreed to continue playing 11v11 for the remainder of the scrimmage.

Ottawa got the first big chance to take the lead in the second 30-minute period when Tucker Hume was brought down in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot, but Seoane sent his penalty kick wide of the post. The former PDL standout redeemed himself minutes later, however, when he scored off the rebound from a shot by Gerardo Bruna’s rebound to give Ottawa a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Saint Louis, which rested a number of players ahead of Wednesday’s game with D.C. United in the Suncoast Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., found an equalizer 10 minutes into the final period when Kidd found space in behind Ottawa’s defense and slid his finish past Andrew MacRae. Three minutes later, though, Williams fired home an outstanding finish from 30 yards that earned Fury FC the victory.

"It was our first real test today and I think we passed, but most importantly we got good fitness out of it," said Williams. "It was nice to get out there tonight with the lads and show the intensity that we've been showing in training. We still have a plenty to work on, but at the end of the day we still have a lot of time to do it and we got a win tonight."

Ottawa’s next preseason action arrives on Thursday when it plays OKC Energy FC, while Saint Louis FC will head to Clearwater for its next preseason contest against Major League Soccer’s D.C. United on Wednesday evening.
