Canada looks to bounce back from opening defeat as it faces regional power

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Canada’s Men’s U20s will try to rebound from defeat in their opening game of the 2017 CONCACAF U20 Championship, and in turn keep their tournament hopes alive, when they face Mexico on Monday night at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.

Canada news and notes

  • Canada fell 1-0 to Honduras in its opening game on Friday night as Jorge Alvarez scored the only goal with 13 minutes to go at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.

  • Recent Ottawa Fury FC signing Thomas Meilleur-Giguere was handed the captain’s armband for the game, while five current and former USL players took the field in the contest.

  • Toronto FC II midfielder Liam Fraser was one of the five, and told CanadaSoccer.com on Saturday “staying committed to our game plan and staying committed as a group, more than anything, will be most important to our match against Mexico.”

  • Vancouver Whitecaps Academy goalkeeper Thomas Hasal finished with the highest player rating for the opening game, according to CONCACAF.com, recording a 6.3 mark out of 10.

Mexico news and notes

  • Mexico took a comfortable 3-0 victory against Antigua & Barbuda in its opening game on Friday to move into first place in Group A.

  • All three goals came in the first half, as a pair of goals by Ronaldo Cisneros bookended an own goal by Antigua & Barbuda’s Vashami Allen.

  • Mexico has been the dominant nation at the CONCACAF U20 Championship over its history, claiming the championship 13 times in its history, including each of the past three tournaments.

  • Cisneros is one of four players from Liga MX side Santos Laguna in its squad, tied with Club America and one fewer than Chivas de Guadalajara.
