SAN JUAN, Costa Rica – The opening games of the 2017 CONCACAF U20 Championship didn’t go to plan for the current and former USL players competing for the United States and Canada, but for Jimmy-Shammar Sanon the tournament got off to a flying start on Saturday afternoon.
Sanon, who claimed the 2016 USL Goal of the Year competition for his finish for FC Montreal against the Charleston Battery, scored the opening goal for Haiti as it took a 5-1 victory against St. Kitts & Nevis on Saturday afternoon at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.
The goal certainly wasn’t as spectacular as his previous effort, as Sanon seized upon a looping ball in the penalty area to tap home from close range, but it set Les Grenadiers on their way to victory. Bryan Chevreuil scored the pick of the other goals in the victory which placed Haiti on top of Group B after the first round of games.
Sanon is one of three Caribbean USL players competing in the tournament, with Antigua & Barbuda’s Javorn Stevens (Seattle Sounders FC 2) and Trinidad & Tobago’s Noah Powder (New York Red Bulls II) also in action.

Haiti next takes on the United States on Tuesday with the chance to seal a place in the second stage with a victory after the U.S. fell 1-0 to Panama in its opening game on Saturday.
