Meilleur-Giguère set to join squad following representing Canada at CONCACAF U20s

OTTAWA – Ottawa Fury FC made another pair of additions from the Montreal Impact on Friday as defenders Thomas Meilleur-Giguère and Aron Mkungilwa joined the club for the 2017 USL season. The signings are pending league and federation approval.

Meilleur-Giguère – who is currently with the Canada U20 National Team at the CONCACAF U20 Championship in Costa Rica – previously led the Impact U18 Academy to a first-place finish in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in 2014-15 before making his professional debut with FC Montreal in 2016, where he featured in 21 USL contests.

The 6-foot defender participated in training sessions with Bologna F.C. 1909 in Serie A. While playing numerous times for the Canadian U-18 squad in 2014 and 2015, Meilleur-Giguère was nominated for Canada's U20 player of the year in 2016, playing six games for his country.

"Thomas is one of the most highly rated young players in Canada at this moment and time," said Fury FC GM and Head Coach Paul Dalglish. "He was a finalist for Canada's U20 player of the year award in 2016 and we're excited to have him. He will add depth to our center back position and we hope he continues his development with us."

Mkungilwa is a Canadian defender and is no stranger to the USL having featured in 28 games for FC Montreal in the USL over the past two years.

After spending four years with the Impact Academy, Mkungilwa inked his first professional contract with their USL side for the latter half of the 2015 season. The 20-year-old also made one appearance for the Canadian U17 National Team in the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.

"Aron is a talented young player with national team experience," said Dalglish. "He's going to come in and compete for minutes in our squad, as well as adding depth. I'm very happy because we are bringing in two real-high quality players at the early part of their career."

Fury FC will face local side Ottawa Internationals in a closed-door exhibition on Friday night before traveling to Florida on Sunday for a week-long camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton with preseason fixtures against fellow USL clubs Saint Louis FC (Feb. 21), OKC Energy FC (Feb. 23) and FC Cincinnati (Feb. 25).
