Canada opens its tournament at the Estadio Saprissa against a familiar foe

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Canada’s Men’s U20s – which counts nine current and former USL players in its ranks – kick off the 2017 CONCACAF U20 Championship on Friday evening when they face Honduras in the opening game of Group A at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Canada news and notes

  • Canada is aiming to make its return to the FIFA U20 World Cup for the first time since 2007, when it hosted the event, as it heads to Costa Rica in positive mood.

  • The side includes five current members of Toronto FC II, including midfielder Luca Uccello and forward Shaan Hundal, who finished tied for the team-high with six goals last season in the USL.

  • Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2’s Kadin Chung, who was named alongside Hundal in the USL 20 Under 20 last year, was also named to the squad after helping WFC2 reach the Western Conference Final of the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs last fall.

  • Canada earned results in both of its most recent meetings with Honduras, earning a 2-1 victory and a 0-0 draw when it visited the country last November.

Honduras news and notes

  • Honduras is aiming to reach its seventh FIFA U20 World Cup, and is looking to return for a second consecutive tournament after advancing in a playoff past Guatemala in 2015 to reach the tournament in New Zealand.

  • The side is coached by Carlos Tábora, who took the position in December, 2015 after the departure of Jorge Jimenez, who led the side to the World Cup two years ago.

  • This year’s side is made up of players who compete domestically, including four members of the Club Deportivo Olimpia, which has claimed the past five Clausura tournaments domestically.

  • Honduras’ U20s hold a slight edge against Canada’s U20s in official competition, sporting a 6-4-0 record all-time while holding a 13-11 goal differential advantage.
