2016 USL 20 Under 20 honorees lead nine current and former USL players selected

OTTAWA – Toronto FC II’s Shaan Hundal and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2’s Kadin Chung were among nine current and former USL players named in Canada’s U20 National Team squad that will compete at this month’s CONCACAF U20 Championship in Costa Rica.

Hundal finished tied for the team-high with six goals in 27 appearances for TFC II a season ago, and was named as the No. 13 selection in last year’s countdown of the top young players in the USL. Chung, who came in at No. 18 in the series, helped lead WFC2 to its first berth in the USL Cup Playoffs as season ago, and recorded 22 appearances in the regular season and playoffs as Vancouver reached the Western Conference Final.

"These are the tests you want for your players [because] you want to expose them to tough matches so they can learn as they develop towards the Men's National Team," said Rob Gale, Canada Soccer's Men's National U-20 Team Coach. "At this level, there are no easy games, so it is vital that we get our moments right and they get the performances we need on the day."

Hundal is one of four 17-year-olds named in the squad, with fellow Toronto FC II player Dante Campbell one of six other current or former TFC II players named in the squad. Current TFC II midfielders Luca Uccello, who recorded three goals and two assists in 20 appearances last season, Liam Fraser and Aidan Daniels were also named, as were Gabriel Boakye and Tristan Borges, both of whom played for the side in 2015 before heading to Europe.

Chung is joined in the defensive group by Montreal Impact center back Thomas Meilleur-Giguere, who made 21 appearances and scored a pair of goals for FC Montreal a season ago. Whitecaps Academy goalkeeper Thomas Hasal is also named in the squad.

Canada will open the tournament, which also serves as qualifying for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup, on Friday, February 17 when it takes on Honduras in San José, Costa Rica. Canada will also face Mexico (20 Feb.) and Antigua & Barbuda (23 Feb.) in the group stage, with the top two teams set to advance to the final stage.

The six teams to advance will be placed into three-team groups, with the top two teams from those groups earning qualification to the World Cup in South Korea this May.
