Goalkeeper brings quality depth and competitiveness for Jeffries

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced on Wednesday the club had re-signed goalkeeper Kyle Renfro for the 2017 season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“I'm most excited about getting back on the field with the boys,” said Renfro. “We became a family last year and I'm looking forward to growing as a group again.”

Renfro had previously played in the USL for the Harrisburg City Islanders and Charlotte Eagles, and served as back-up for the club last season to the likes of John Berner and Cody Mizell. Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries said he was pleased to retain Renfro to provide quality depth for the side, while also praising the attitude Renfro had shown in his time at the club.

“It's very difficult to come in as a goalkeeper knowing that you may not play during the season and maintain a really strong training mentality,” said Jeffries. “[To] work hard, to push yourself and the guys around you, it's difficult, but Kyle was able to do that last year.”

Renfro has also made an impact off the field for the Independence, and last season led the club’s first goalkeeper camp that allowed top youth goalkeepers in the region a chance to sharpen their skills.

“I've always been a big believer of getting into the community and helping the youth,” said Renfro. “I remember growing up having professional athletes introduce the game of soccer to me. I think it's important to give back and inspire others the way I once was.”
