SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Saint Louis FC announced on Thursday it had signed 2016 USL All-League selection Irvin Herrera to a contract extension that includes an option for the 2018 season. The club also announced Herrera would spend the 2017 season on loan with the New York Cosmos.

The loan deal for the El Salvador international includes cash considerations for the 2017 season and creates roster flexibility as Saint Louis FC continues to build its team for the upcoming season.

“This opportunity allows us the roster flexibility to continue and build towards our goals here in the 2017 USL season,” said STLFC General Manager, Jeremy Alumbaugh. “The direction of the team is starting to take shape and this move will allow us to continue in that direction. We wish Irvin good health and luck with the Cosmos and in the Gold Cup with El Salvador this summer."

Herrera joined Saint Louis FC in 2016 and went on to score 14 goals in 26 appearances to earn All-League Second Team honors.

Internationally, Herrera recently scored the decisive goal for El Salvador in a 1-0 victory against Nicaragua that earned a place for his country at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The goal was his second in 13 appearances for La Selecta.
