Toronto FC II’s Shaan Hundal had the only goal as the Canada Men’s U20 National Team took a 1-0 victory against Panama on Thursday night in the first of two exhibitions between the sides in preparation for next month’s 2017 CONCACAF U20 Championship in Costa Rica.

Hundal was one of three TFC II players to start the game alongside Luca Uccello and Liam Fraser. Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2’s Kadin Chung – the No. 18 selection on the 2016 USL 20 Under 20 – and former FC Montreal defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguerre were also included in the starting lineup.

The No. 13 selection on the 2016 USL 20 Under 20 struck, Hundal gave Canada the lead in just the fourth minute. Uccello, who was selected as captain for the contest, came close to a second 10 minutes later as his free kick was turned wide by Panama’s goalkeeper.

Montreal’s Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla and TFC II’s Malik Johnson – No. 14 in the USL 20 Under 20 last year – and Aidan Daniels also saw action in the second half. While Panama threatened in the final 15 minutes, hitting the crossbar off a free kick in the 83rd minute, the visitors were able to hold firm to claim the win.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday to conclude Canada’s trip.
