Florida Cup Playoff kicks off with Argentinian and Colombian powers squaring off

ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2017 Florida Cup Playoff kicks off on Sunday afternoon when Argentina’s River Plate and Colombia’s Millonarios FC square off Bright House Networks Field for the right to face Sao Paulo of Brazil in the semifinals next Thursday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.

River Plate news and notes

  • River enters the Florida Cup sitting in seventh place in the Primera Division, nine points behind its biggest rival and current league-leader Boca Juniors.

  • The side boasts the leading scorer in the league, however, with Sebastian Driussi having accounted for nine of the club’s 22 goals in 14 games this season.

  • In addition to their return to league action, River is also preparing for the 2017 Copa Libertadores, which the side qualified for by winning the 2016 Copa Argentina.

  • River will open the Copa Libertadores against another Colombian side, Independiente Medellín, in the group stage on March 15.

Millonarios FC news and notes

  • Millonarios is coming off a season where it finished in the playoff positions, but was eliminated in the first round of the postseason in both the Apertura and Finalizacion.

  • Ayron del Valle proved a bright point for the side, particularly during the Finalizacion season when he lead the league with 12 goals in 20 contests.

  • Millonarios’ fourth position overall earned the side a place in the 2017 Copa Libertadores, where the side will square off with Brazil’s Atlético Paranaense for a place in the group stage in February.

  • The club’s 14 league championships in Colombia are the second-most in the league’s history, trailing only Atletico Nacional’s with 15.
