ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2017 Florida Cup Playoff brings together two historic clubs on Sunday afternoon when Brazil’s Vasco Da Gama and Ecuador’s Barcelona SC square off Central Broward Stadium for the chance to face Corinthians of Brazil in the semifinals next Wednesday night. Vasco Da Gama news and notes

• Vasco earned its return to Brazil’s Serie A last season as it finished third in Serie B with a record of 19-11-8, good for 65 points.

• The side was led by Nene, who finished tied for second in the league with 13 goals in 38 games during the season.

• Vasco has bounced back and forth between Serie A and Serie B over the past four seasons, with a pair of relegations being immediately followed by promotion the next year.

• The club has won the Brazilian championship four times, but the last came in 2000. The club’s most recent national silverware came in the 2011 Copa Do Brazil, but it has also claimed the state’s Campeonato Carioca each of the past two years.

Barcelona SC news and notes

• Barcelona claimed its 15th league championship this past season, extending its record for the most in the league’s history, by four points from Emelec.

• The side was led by Uruguayan forward Jonathan Alvez, who finished the season with 20 goals, good for fourth in the league.

• Founded in 1925 by Eutimio Pérez – a native of Barcelona, Spain – the club’s logo shares features with historic Spanish club FC Barcelona.

• Barcelona’s championship placed it in the group stages of the 2017 Copa Libertadores, where it will face fellow 2017 Florida Cup participant Estudiantes de la Plata of Argentina and Colombia’s Atletico Nacional in the group stage.
