CLUB HISTORY

Founded in 1901, River Plate has built a history of success both at the domestic and international level with Los Millionarios having claimed the Argentinian Primera Division title a record 36 times, and the Copa Libertadores on three occasions, most recently in 2015.

The home of legendary names such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Jose Manuel Moreno, and more modern standouts Ariel Ortega, Enzo Francescoli and Hernan Crespo, River has a deep and rich history which has been burnished by its home venue of El Monumental, the club’s stadium since 1938. Add in its enduring rivalry with Boca Juniors, and you have one of the most identifiable and respected clubs in the world.

Player to Watch

Jonathan Maidana

The veteran center back has made more than 150 appearances for River since joining the club in 2010, a move that made him the latest to have played for both sides of the River-Boca Juniors rivalry. During his time with the club, Maidana has helped the club claim its most recent Primera Division championship in 2014, and the Copa Libertadores in 2015, with his calm presence at the back a key to the club’s success.
