Sacramento, Cincinnati Set for Preseason Clash

FCC will also face MLS’s Chicago, USL’s OKC & Ottawa in 2017 preparations

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC will play host to FC Cincinnati in one of the USL’s marquee preseason matchups at Bonney Field on March 4, marking the first meeting between two clubs that finished in the top three of their respective conferences a season ago.

“Cincinnati is a big club at our level that has a passionate following of fans and supporters similar to Sacramento,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “It will be great to welcome them to Bonney Field. The match will be a good gauge of where we are at just prior to the regular season and a good test for our players. We are really looking forward to hosting them.”

“This match will be a good test for us,” said FC Cincinnati Head Coach John Harkes. “We will both be entering the season with high expectations and our fans will be treated to a very high-level, competitive game.” 

Sacramento finished top of the USL’s Western Conference in 2016, earning a third consecutive berth in the USL Cup Playoffs. Cincinnati finished third in the Eastern Conference in its inaugural season, while also setting league attendance records that had previously been held by Republic FC.

FCC additionally announced the remainder of its preseason schedule, which will also see the side face Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire (Feb. 22) and the USL’s OKC Energy FC (Feb. 19) and Ottawa Fury FC (Feb. 25) during its trip to IMG Academy in Bradenton.

“Our staff has put together a comprehensive preseason schedule that will help us prepare for our second season,” said Harkes. “With our trips to both coasts and our local friendlies, we expect to see a variety of skill levels across the pitch that will allow the staff to assess how this new group will gel in a variety of game situations. Also, spending two weeks together on the road will hopefully accelerate our progress in terms of team chemistry.”

Tickets for the contest between Republic FC and FCC will go on sale on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com.
