Reigning Ecuadorian champions head to Florida Cup to prepare for new season

The most successful club side in Ecuador, and the reigning league champion, Barcelona SC arrives at the Florida Cup aiming to prepare for both the defense of its domestic title, but also to gear up for the 2017 Cope Libertadores. With a squad that includes four current Ecuador internationals, Barcelona should provide a challenge for any opponent in the knockout tournament.

NEED TO KNOW

Head Coach: Guillermo Almada
League: Serie A
Playoffs Opener: Jan.  15 – vs. Vasco Da Gama, Central Broward Stadium, Lauderhill, Fla.

CLUB HISTORY

Founded in Guayaquil in 1925 by Eutimio Perez – a native of Barcelona, Spain, from whence the team gets its name – Barcelona SC has become one of the most popular clubs in the country, and is the only side to have never been relegated from the top flight in its history. The side won back-to-back championships in 1970-71 and then again in 1980-81, and has recently returned to prominence with two titles this decade.

Twice a runner-up for the Copa Libertadores in 1990 and 1998, the side will return to the tournament again this year in a group that also includes fellow Florida Cup competitor Estudiantes de la Plata of Argentina and Atletico Nacional of Colombia. Laying the foundation for success in that tournament, and to pursue back-to-back league championships for a third time in its history will be at the forefront of its time in Florida.

Player to Watch

Jonathan Alvez

While Barcelona boasts a number of top domestic talents, it was Uruguayan forward Alvez that led the way for the club in 2016 with 20 goals as the side claimed its 15th league championship. The 28-year-old had previously helped Danubio claim the Uruguayan championship in the 2013-14 season, and now enters his second year in Ecuador looking for even more success.
