Bayer Leverkusen news and notes

  • Bayer opened the Florida Cup with a 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout against Argentina’s Estudiates de la Plata on Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg.

  • Mexico international Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez missed a first-half penalty kick for Leverkusen, but Sam Schreck’s second-half goal left the teams tied 1-1 after regulation.

  • Bayer forward Stefan Kießling had an impressive second half performance, going close to finding the net as the Bundesliga side dominated the second half against a 10-man Estudiantes.

  • A regulation victory would move Bayer and VfL Wolfsburg close to winning the team tournament, with the second German side set to face Clube Esporte Bahia on Thursday.

Atletico Mineiro news and notes

  • The side took two wins out of two with victories against German club Schalke 04 and fellow Brazilian club Corinthians at the tournament.

  • Atletico is led this year by former AC Milan and Manchester City forward Robinho, and his fellow former Brazilian international Fred, both of whom have performed well this past year.

  • The club finished fourth in Brazil’s Serie A in 2016 to secure a berth in this year’s Copa Libertadores as Fred notched 14 goals and Robinho 12 in the campaign.
