CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced on Tuesday the club had re-signed midfielder David Spies pending league and U.S. Soccer Federation approval. Prior to joining the Independence at the end of last season, Spies was with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.

“I was very happy to hear about the offer and I am very excited to return to the Independence,” said Spies. “When I signed last year, right away I liked everything about the club, the team, and the city of Charlotte.”

The German-United States dual citizen joined the Independence last September. The 22-year-old did not record any playing time in the USL in 2016, but his fast playing style should impact the club in 2017.

"He is a very fast, athletic player in terms of his physical qualities," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "But more importantly, he's very fast in terms of his tactical decisions and ability to move off the ball."

The Herdecke, Germany native began his career with Bundesliga club VFL Bochum as a U17 player. He continued to train with FC Nürnberg during his U19 season after being transferred in the winter of 2013. Prior to signing with Charlotte, he appeared in a few friendlies for FC Augsburg, but not in any league matches outside the U23 squad.

“To train with players from the Bundesliga was very special for me,” said Spies. “I learned faster and more effectively having teammates that played at a high level.”
