COUVA, Trinidad & Tobago – New York Red Bulls II standout Derrick Etienne Jr. scored his first senior international goal as Haiti took a 4-3 overtime victory against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday night at Ato Boldon Stadium to move Les Grenadiers one step away from a berth at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Etienne took advantage of a piece of quick free kick to curl home a finish from the left side of the penalty area. Named No. 3 in the USL 20 Under 20 in 2016 as he helped the Red Bulls II claim both the USL Cup and regular season championship, the goal was Etienne’s first for his country.

Haiti had taken a 4-2 victory against Suriname to open the tournament on Friday night, and booked their place in a playoff against the fifth-place side in the 2017 Copa Centroamericana which kicks off on January 13. The winner of the home-and-home playoff will advance to the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
