ST. LOUIS, Mo. – FC Cincinnati Head Coach John Harkes will have to make some space next to his MAC Hermann Trophy in the family trophy cabinet.

On Friday, Harkes’ son, Ian, claimed the honor as he was awarded the top individual honor in NCAA Men’s Soccer at the award ceremony held at the Missouri Athletic Club. John and Ian Harkes are the only father-son duo to have both earned the award in the trophy’s history.

A standout at Wake Forest University, Ian Harkes was also named the NSCAA Scholar Athlete of the Year. He had previously been named the the ACC Midfielder of the Year, ACC Championship MVP and NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player, the first player from the ACC to accomplish all three in the same season.

"This is a huge honor," Ian Harkes said. "I want to thank God for watching over me this year and keeping me safe and healthy. I want to thank my family for always being there. My parents were my inspiration to start playing soccer. To Lauren and Lily, my sisters for all their support, and to Sarah for all her support. My grandparents - my grandpa is here and he's my number one fan, he came to all my games.

“To all my coaches at Wake, Jay Vidovich and Ryan Martin, for believing in me and letting me come to Wake Forest and begin my journey there, and now Bobby Muuss who took over and helped our program and helped us to so much success. “To Steve Armas, Dane Brenner and the rest of the staff. Of course I have to thank my teammates, because any success that I've ever had is due to them. They've helped me all four years throughout the ups and downs."

John Harkes was awarded the MAC Hermann Trophy in 1987 after his junior season at the University of Virginia. After a standout playing career in both Major League Soccer and Europe as well as for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Harkes brought immediate success to FC Cincinnati in its inaugural season as the side finished third in the USL’s Eastern Conference.

Now his son could follow in his footsteps to D.C. United. A United academy product, news that Ian Harkes could sign as a Homegrown Player with D.C. ahead of the 2017 MLS season has been reported by the Washington Post’s Steve Goff.
