Bundesliga side clashes with Argentinian club in tournament’s opening contest

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Germany’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata will open the 2017 Florida Cup on Sunday afternoon at Al Lang Stadiuum with some notable names set to appear for either side. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Bayer Leverkusen news and notes

  • Leverkusen arrived in Florida sitting in ninth place (6-7-3, 21pts) in the Bundesliga this season after a third-place finish last May.

  • Bayer has advanced to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League, where it will face Spain’s Atletico Madrid for a place in the Quarterfinals.

  • Mexico international Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez leads the team with five goals this season. The El Tri star has scored 22 goals in 43 league games since joining Bayer from Manchester United.

  • Bayer is coached by Roger Schmidt, who joined the club in June 2014 after leading Austra’s Red Bull Salzburg to both the Austrian Bundeliga and Austrian Cup in the 2013-14 season.

Estudiantes de la Plata news and notes

  • Estudiantes is currently sitting in fourth place in the Primera Division in Argentina (8-3-3, 27pts), four points behind Boca Juniors at almost the midway point of the season.

  • The side qualified for the 2017 Copa Libertadores, and will open group play against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional, Ecuador’s Barcelona S.C. and one team to be determined in March.

  • The Florida Cup will likely see the return of legendary midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron to the field as he prepares to compete in the Copa Libertadores.

  • Veron is also the club’s chairman, but pledged to return to the field should Estudiantes fans buy 65% of viewing boxes at their stadium. His salary during the 18-month contract will be donated back to the club.
