RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers announced on Monday the return of midfielder Fred Owusu Sekyere for the 2017 USL season, pending league and federation approval.

“Owusu has been an exceptional performer since returning to Richmond two years ago,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “He's developed into a well-respected leader within the squad with a wealth of USL experience.”

Anchoring the midfield in 61 games over two seasons, Owusu Sekyere has amassed more than 3,600 minutes with the Kickers. Leading the team with seven assists in 2015, he contributed a goal and an assist last season as the side reached the USL Cup Playoffs for a sixth consecutive year.

A standout at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2006 to 2009, Owusu Sekyere led RVA FC to a 2013 Championship before signing a professional contract with the Charlotte Eagles. The Ghanaian midfielder made 28 appearances in Charlotte in 2014, and recorded more than 2,000 minutes of action in an Eagles uniform while contributing two goals and three assists.

Owusu Sekyere joins 10 players currently under contract for the Kickers upcoming 25th Anniversary season, joining Samuel Asante, Jackson Eskay, Luiz Fernando, Anthony Grant, Yudai Imura, Sunny Jane, Alex Lee, Conor Shanosky, Braeden Troyer and William Yomby.
