Ottawa adds size and experience to center back position

OTTAWA – Ottawa Fury FC announced on Monday the signing of 25-year-old center back Shane McEleney, pending league and federation approval.

The 6-foot-2 Irishman has spent his entire professional career playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division. From 2009 to 2015 he played for his hometown club, Derry City FC, where he played over 170 games in seven seasons with the Candystripes.

During his time with the club, McEleney had the opportunity to play with his younger brother Patrick and together they won three trophies in five years (2010- First Division Champions; 2011- League Cup Winners; 2012- FAI Cup Winners).

“Shane is another key player profile for us,” said Fury FC Head Coach Paul Dalglish. “He is an extremely technical defender with fantastic pace. His technique will allow us to build form the back and his pace with allow us to play with a high line.”

In 2015, the Derry native moved to St. Patrick's Athletic F.C. where he featured in 24 games in two seasons and won the League Cup in his first year with the club. This will mark McEleney’s first experience in North America.

“I'm overwhelmed to be signing with Ottawa Fury FC, I can't wait to get started,” said McEleney. “I needed a change in my career and when I spoke to Paul about his plans for the club’s USL debut season in 2017 it got my attention from the get go.

“His enthusiasm for the coming season was just what I wanted to hear. I'm excited to say the least and looking forward to meeting the players, staff and fans come February. Let's hope the 2017 season is a memorable one.”
