A matchup of two Defender of the Year Finalists highlights the USL Cup Final

Both the New York Red Bulls II and Swope Park Rangers had impressive defensive records this season, and a central reason why was the two players who this week were both named to the USL All-League First Team, and as finalists for the USL Defender of the Year award.

The Red Bulls II’s Aaron Long arrived in New York from Seattle Sounders FC 2 this offseason, and has become a stabilizing force in the team’s lineup alongside standout rookie Zach Carroll. Swope Park’s Amer Didic, meanwhile, didn’t start the season at the center of the Rangers’ defense, but since becoming a regular member of the starting lineup helped the side surge into first the playoffs, and then a first USL Cup Final.

The third-year professional blossomed into one of the top defenders in the USL with the Red Bulls II this season, showing composure in defense and an ability to distribute after winning possession that quickly got the Red Bulls II moving forward. The 6-foot-1 center back also proved a threat from set pieces, scoring twice in the regular season, and then twice more in New York’s 4-0 victory against Orlando City B to open the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs.

The rookie from Baker University was one of the major revelations of the USL regular season, as his partnership with Oumar Ballo went from strength-to-strength in the second half of the season. Didic’s technical ability brought the spotlight to the 6-foot-4 center back, who earned call-ups to Sporting Kansas City’s squad for the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League over the summer thanks to his performance for the Rangers.
