June 8, 2016 – Children’s Mercy Victory Field

With the side on a three-game winless streak, and the memory of a 4-1 defeat to the same opponent three weeks prior fresh in their minds, the Swope Park Rangers were out for a little bit of revenge as they welcomed Rio Grande Valley FC to Children’s Mercy Victory Field.

By the end of the contest, Kevin Oliveira had made his mark as one of the top young players in the league. Playing a role in all four of the Rangers’ goals, Swope Park took a 4-0 victory against the Toros in one of the most scintillating attacking performances of their season.

The Rangers held the upper hand early, and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Mark Anthony notched the first of his two goals on the night as he capitalized on Oliveira’s pass through to chip his finish into the left side of the net. Four minutes later, Gonzalez notched his second on a classic counter-attack. Oliveira pushed the ball upfield from his own half, and then split two defenders with his pass, to give Gonzalez time and space to cut past a retreating defender and shoot low to the left corner.

Oliveira added a goal of his own two minutes before the halftime break, as he waited patiently for a pass from Ualefi on the right side of the penalty area. The young Cape Verdean’s shot went low into the left corner of the net to put the Rangers up 3-0 at halftime.

Swope Park added a fourth with 20 minutes to go as Oliveira completed a hat trick of assists on the night. After Daniel Salloi stole possession in the Toros’ half, and played Oliveira into the right side of the penalty area. Oliveira feinted to shoot, cut past a sliding defender and returned a pass to Salloi, who capped the scoring with a low finish to the left corner. With six minutes to go, Oliveira’s night came to an end, as the player who later in the summer would be named No. 2 in the USL 20 Under 20 series received a standing ovation in appreciation of a standout performance.
