As he took his place on the bench at the Florida Citrus Bowl for the 2011 USL Championship Game, Sean Kelley certainly wasn’t expecting to see any action for Orlando City SC. After all, Kelley had only appeared in two games during the regular season, serving as back-up to the 2011 USL Goalkeeper of the Year, Miguel Gallardo, as the Lions took on the Harrisburg City Islanders in front of a crowd of a then-USL record 11,220 fans at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

“In a game like that,” Kelley said, “if I were to have to come in, something would have had to go wrong.”

Three minutes into the second half, something definitely went wrong. With the game still scoreless, City Islanders standout forward Sainey Touray got in behind the Orlando defense off a long clearance by Chase Harrison. Gallardo came off his line, but not quickly enough, as he brought down the advancing Touray just outside the penalty area, resulting in a red card, and Kelley’s entrance into the game.

Gallardo’s red card proved to be just the prelude to a dramatic championship game that swung back and forth between the two sides both late in the game and in overtime. Lawrence Olum appeared to have given 10-man Orlando victory in the 89th minute with a low shot from the top of the penalty area, only for the City Islanders to equalize in the fifth minute of stoppage time through J.T. Noone to send the game to an extra 30 minutes.

Five minutes into overtime the City Islanders took the lead when Touray headed home a near-post cross to make it 2-1 to the visitors, stunning the Citrus Bowl crowd. Harrisburg nearly added a third early in the second half of overtime when Jose Angulo headed off the post in the 109th minute, and that would come back to haunt the City Islanders when Orlando was awarded a penalty kick with five minutes to go. Lewis Neal stepped up and converted, sending the game to a penalty shootout.

Kelley then came to the fore, as he saved attempts from both Nelson Becerra and Jose Angulo in Harrisburg’s first two shots. Orlando’s Neal and Yordany Alvarez – named league MVP the day before – converted to make it 2-0 to the Lions, but then momentum swung back the other way. Harrisburg’s Noone and Stephen Basso both scored, while Orlando’s Charlie Campbell and Luke Boden both missed, leaving it tied 2-2 going to the fifth round.

Touray shot first for Harrisburg, but sent his shot wide of the left post. Orlando’s Devorn Jorsling made no mistake, burying his finish to send the supporters section behind the goal into a frenzy, earning the Lions their first championship as Kelley took Championship MVP honors.

“It means everything,” said Orlando midfielder Jamie Watson following the game. “When we won the regular season championship, we said, 'we're only halfway there,' it was only half of the goals we had set. To do it like this proves we were able to live up to the billing that we gave ourselves and a lot of people gave us. I'm happy that we could, this will be a night we will all remember forever.”
