Rio Grande Valley FC news and notes
Regular Season record: 14-7-9, 51pts
The Toros posted the best record of any expansion side in the Western Conference this season, and finished with the best goal differential in the conference (+23) to earn the No. 2 seed.
RGVFC’s defense conceded the fewest goals in the Western Conference (24), and set a USL record with a 758-minute shutout streak that helped the side post a 10-game undefeated streak to propel the club up the standings.
The Toros also finished with the second-most goals in the Western Conference, as five players finished with at least six goals on the season, and four finished with at least three assists.
Rio Grande Valley FC is one of four expansion sides to reach the postseason this year, joining the Swope Park Rangers in the West, and FC Cincinnati and Orlando City B in the East.
OKC Energy FC news and notes
Regular Season record: 10-7-13, 43pts
Energy FC returned to the USL Cup Playoffs for a second consecutive season after reaching the Western Conference Championship a season ago as the No. 2 seed.
OKC was in contention for a top-four position for much of the season, but tailed off at the end of the year as it concluded on a six-game winless streak.
Energy FC’s 13 draws set a USL record for a single season, surpassing the total of 12 set by the Richmond Kickers in the 2014 USL regular season.
No Energy FC player scored more than four goals in the regular season, as the club’s offensive output fell from 44 goals a season ago to 32 goals this season.
Key Players
Rio Grande Valley FC – F Memo Rodriguez: The 20-year-old Houston Dynamo Homegrown Player came into his own in his second season in the USL with six goals and a team-leading seven assists. Rodriguez’s touch and creativity in the final third were a major asset for a Toros side that looked to control the rhythm and tempo of games with its possession, and his influence will likely be key against Energy FC’s defense.
OKC Energy FC – GK Cody Laurendi: While the club’s attack sputtered for much of the season, Laurendi’s play earned Energy FC points on a regular basis, and he’ll likely need to be the side’s best player again on the road against a potent Toros attack. Laurendi set a club record with 12 shutouts this year, falling one short of the USL single-season record, and replicating his five-save road shutout against RGVFC on August 6 would go a long way to giving OKC hope of an upset.
