T2 look for victory that could secure place in playoffs with help elsewhere

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers 2 will look to continue their four-game winning streak and in the process secure a place in the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs when they play host to Arizona United SC on Saturday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT.

Portland Timbers 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 11-14-4, 37pts
  • T2 took a 2-0 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 last Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium for its fourth consecutive victory.
  • Villyan Bijev had a goal and assist in the win, and is now tied for the league-lead with nine assists this season alongside Sacramento Republic FC’s Danny Barrera.
  • With a win, Portland can advance to the playoffs should San Antonio fail to take victory against Rio Grande Valley, and Orange County not record a larger victory against Colorado Springs to overtake Portland on either goal differential or goal scored.
  • T2 can also advance with a draw, should San Antonio lose to RGVFC, Orange County either draw or lose to Colorado Springs, and Real Monarchs SLC draw or lose against the LA Galaxy II.

Arizona United SC news and notes

  • Current record: 9-13-7, 34pts
  • Arizona rallied to take a 3-2 victory against Real Monarchs SLC last Saturday night at the Peoria Sports Complex.
  • United rallied behind goals from Peter Kelly and Long Tan to earn victory as Luke Rooney recorded the opening goal and an assist.
  • Rooney was named to the USL Team of the Week for his performance in the contest, and now has seven goals and five assists this season.
  • Tan’s goal was his 10th of the season, giving him double-digit goals in back to back seasons for Arizona.
