Toros take aim at first as San Antonio looks to hold onto playoff position

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC plays host to San Antonio FC for the final regular season meeting between the clubs on Saturday night at Toro Park, with the Toros aiming at first place in the West, and SAFC looking to hold onto the conference’s eighth and final playoff berth. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.

Rio Grande Valley FC news and notes

  • Current record: 13-7-9, 48pts
  • The Toros took a 1-0 victory against Orange County Blues FC to remain in contention for first place in the Western Conference last Saturday night at Anteater Stadium.
  • Dzenan Catic scored the only goal of the game to give the Toros victory to keep the Toros one point behind Colorado Springs and Sacramento in the standings.
  • RGVFC needs a victory, and both the Switchbacks and Republic FC to lose, to claim first place in the Western Conference on Saturday.
  • The Toros can also assure themselves of the No. 3 seed with at least a draw against SAFC.

San Antonio FC news and notes

  • Current record: 10-11-8, 38pts
  • San Antonio moved back into eighth place in the Western Conference with a 2-0 win against Tulsa Roughnecks FC last Saturday at Toyota Field.
  • Franck Tayou and Shawn Chin both found the net in the second half for SAFC, while goalkeeper Matt Cardone saved a penalty kick for a second successive game.
  • San Antonio can guarantee its place in the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs with a win, but a draw could see the side overtaken by Portland, Orange County or Real Monarchs SLC.
  • SAFCs’ Carlos Alvarez has a team-high seven assists this season, two behind league-leaders Danny Barrera of Sacramento and Villyan Bijev of Portland.
