KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A highlight-reel blast by Kris Tyrpak and a goal and assist by Dane Kelly led the Swope Park Rangers to a 3-0 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Victory Field. The Rangers took the lead when Kelly sent a low cross from the left that found Christian Duke at the near post for a lifted finish in just the third minute, and almost added a second soon after as Roughnecks goalkeeper Jake Feener had to make good saves from Tyrpak and Ayrton in back-to-back minutes. Tyrpak did make it two in the 32nd minute with a highlight-reel finish from 30 yards into the top-left corner of the net, as SPR took control of the game, and Kelly made it three on a breakaway just before the halftime break to add to his earlier assist. Kelly almost added another with 19 minutes to go in an up-and down second half that saw both sides look to get forward quickly, but the three first-half goals proved sufficient as the Rangers moved closer to a postseason berth.

Scoring:
3’ – SPR – Christian Duke (Dane Kelly)
32’ – SPR – Kris Tyrpak (Ayrton)
43’ – SPR – Dane Kelly (Ualefi)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. The Rangers struck early, and then wrapped up the victory before the halftime break as they bolstered their playoff chances with a commanding victory against the Roughnecks. Swope Park has been strong coming out of the gates quickly, particularly at home this season, and now sits much more comfortably than it did after its loss to Rio Grande Valley FC last Saturday night. With five points needed from SPR’s final three games, including another against the Roughnecks, the postseason is within the side’s grasp.

  • 2. There have been a good number of spectacular goals in the USL this season, and Kris Tyrpak added to that list with his top-left corner thunderbolt just past the half-hour mark that gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead. The 2013 PDL Most Valuable Player has had some issues with injuries since arriving at Swope Park for the new campaign, but when he’s on song is capable of producing moments of brilliance like the one below.

  • 3. Another player who hasn’t had the best luck with injuries this season has been USL all-time leading scorer Dane Kelly, but on Saturday night the Jamaican forward put in a vintage performance and notched a goal and assist for his efforts. With players like Kelly and Tyrpak coming into form to go with others like Mark Anthony Gonzalez, Tyler Pasher and Ayrton, Swope Park could a side teams might not want to see should they book a place in the playoffs in the next two weeks.
