MONTREAL – A 10-man FC Montreal took a 2-1 victory against the Charleston Battery on Wednesday afternoon at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard. Montreal took the lead in the 14th minute as a floated cross by Janouk Charbonneau found Anthony Jackson-Hamel, and FCMTL’s leading scorer buried a low finish for his ninth goal of the season, and both teams had chances to find the net in an open first half. The Battery hit back five minutes before the break, though, as Jeremy Ebobisse ran onto a pass by Maikel Chang in the right channel, cut onto his left foot and curled a finish into the top-left corner for his first professional goal. Montreal came close to regaining the lead early in the second half when Jackson-Hamel’s header was tipped over by Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper. Montreal was reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when Aron Mkungilwa was sent off, but the hosts regained the lead with nine minutes to go when Jimmy-Shammar Sanon cut in from the left side and drove home a finish from 25 yards to make it 2-1. Charleston pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and had a late appeal for a penalty kick waved away, but Montreal held on to take all three points.

Scoring:
14’ – MTL – Anthony Jackson-Hamel (Janouk Charbonneau)
40’ – CHS – Jeremy Ebobisse (Maikel Chang)
81’ – MTL – Jimmy-Shammar Sanon

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Montreal was officially eliminated from playoff contention with its defeat to Louisville on Saturday afternoon, but the young side continued its strong late-season form with its victory against the Battery as Jimmy-Shammar Sanon’s brilliant finish with nine minutes to go lifted the side to its seventh win of the season. Montreal is now 5-1-1 over its past seven games, and will hopefully be able to use this run as a building block to the 2017 season, and get off to the sort of start that doesn’t quickly submarine its playoff hopes.

  • 2. The Battery missed out on a big opportunity with the game level and up a man, and instead fell to a second consecutive defeat that leaves the team’s hopes of a home playoff game greatly diminished. Jeremy Ebobisse’s first professional goal was an excellent highlight, but the Battery continued to struggle with consistency as good attacking spells were quickly followed by periods where the team struggled to maintain possession, allowing Montreal to keep a foothold in the game.

  • 3. Given the records of the two teams in the past two seasons, it’s probably a little odd to think that Montreal remains undefeated against Charleston in the four meetings between the teams since the start of the 2015 season. Montreal’s victory against the Battery on Wednesday completed a season sweep after a 3-1 win at MUSC Health Stadium earlier this year, and moved Montreal to 3-0-1 against the Battery overall. With Wednesday’s win Montreal’s 15th in the regular season in their first two seasons, FCMTL’s three wins against the Battery are one-fifth of the club’s victories overall.
