LANGLEY, B.C. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 has had Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2’s number for much of the season with two wins in three previous matches. Down a man for much of the second half and trailing by a goal, S2’s Jordan Schweitzer completed a big night with his second tally – a shorthanded one – in the 80th minute to help the visiting side earn a 2-2 draw against WFC2 on Monday at McLeod Athletic Park. His two scores offset a strong performance by Vancouver’s Marco Bustos who netted two goals of his own. Seattle won the season series with a 2-0-2 record against WFC2. S2 moves to 9-11-7 (34 points) overall and 2-6-4 on the road. Seattle also moves into a tie with Orange County Blues FC for ninth place in points in the Western Conference standings. Vancouver is now 11-7-9 (42 points) overall and 6-2-4 at home – 1-0-1 at McLeod – and stays in fourth place in the West standings.

Scoring:
3’ – VAN – Marco Bustos (Kyle Greig)
21’ – SEA – Jordan Schweitzer (Irvin Parra)
50’ – VAN – Marco Bustos (penalty)
80’ – SEA – Jordan Schweitzer (Victor Mansaray)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Things looked bleak for Seattle playing down a man and down a goal with approximately 40 minutes remaining as Zach Mathers was sent off in the 51st minute for a hard tackle near midfield. But S2 found some late-game heroics as Jordan Schweitzer tallied his second of the match in the 80th minute to help Seattle come away with a road point. Victor Mansaray got into a dangerous position on the left side of the box and sent a cross with pace toward the edge of the six-yard area. Schweitzer ran onto the ball perfectly and headed inside the near right post to tie the score at 2-2. It was Schweitzer’s first brace and boosted his total to four goals on the campaign.

  • 2. Vancouver’s Marco Bustos put together his best performance since a mid-June match against the Swope Park Rangers, when he recorded a brace in a 3-2 win. Bustos took charge Monday evening with a goal in each half, including an early tally in the third minute to get things going. A cross from the right was chested to the ground by Kyle Greig, and it ended up being a perfect lead pass for Bustos who rifled a close-range shot into the net. Bustos helped Vancouver regain the lead in the 50th minute with his penalty kick conversation. Bustos aimed for the left of the frame, and it was just far enough to find the net as S2 goalkeeper Tyler Miller deflected the ball to his right, but it ricocheted off of the left post and over the goal line for a 2-1 lead. Bustos now has five goals on the season.

  • 3. Sandwiched in between Bustos’ scores, Seattle had a strong buildup to equalize in the 21st minute. S2 worked the ball up the left side, with Schweitzer in a dangerous position to drop the ball off to Irvin Parra. Schweitzer spun away from his defender, received the ball back from Parra and fired right footed inside the far left post to tie the score at 1-1. Parra notched his first assist in his four games this year.
