MONTREAL – Aodhan Quinn’s header off of a Ben Newnam corner kick was the difference as Louisville City FC defeated FC Montreal 1-0 on Saturday at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard. LouCity swept the season series against Montreal, following up the club’s 2-0 win on July 4 at Slugger Field. Quinn’s 49th-minute score helped Louisville improve to 10-2-2 on the road and 15-4-8 (53 points) overall. Montreal, meanwhile, saw its five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) come to an end. Montreal dropped to 2-10-1 at home and 6-19-2 (20 points) overall. Louisville is now within three points of the Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls II, though NYRBII has played two less matches than LouCity. Louisville’s defense earned its 11th shutout of the season, with rookie goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski earning the clean sheet in his professional debut.

Three Things That Mattered:

• 1. After taking the majority of the set piece chances in the opening half, Louisville captain Aodhan Quinn was on the receiving end to get his side on the score sheet. Ben Newnam delivered the right-footed corner kick from the left and found Quinn toward the far right post. Quinn headed it across toward the upper left of the frame to notch his third goal of the season in the 49th minute. Newnam now has two assists this year. Montreal has conceded a goal in every match this season.

• 2. Montreal did maintain a spotless first 45 minutes, though the right post helped the host side midway through the half. Louisville’s fourth corner kick of the match in the 25th minute was a key opportunity as Quinn’s left-footed ball was driven toward the near right side where Tarek Morad rose for the header, only to see his shot carom off of the right post. It capped off a busy two-minute stretch where LouCity was lurking near the box. In the 23rd minute, Kadeem Dacres split a pair of defenders and had the match’s first shot on goal, forcing Montreal goalkeeper David Paulmin to parry the ball away.

• 3. Louisville goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski made his professional debut as the club needed to shake things up on that front. His first big test was in first-half stoppage time as a crafty Heikel Jarras, trapped an Alessandro Riggi cross to himself and while falling down Jarras fired right-footed toward the near right post. Dobrowolski made the diving save to make sure it stayed 0-0 heading into the half. Dobrowolski got the call in net because Greg Ranjitsingh received his first call-up to Guatemala’s national team for World Cup qualifying, so he was unavailable for the Montreal match. As a backup option to Dobrowolski, who signed with the club in mid-June, recently retired Scott Goodwin was brought back for this stretch. Dobrowloski’s debut capped off a busy week of news on the defensive front as defender Conor Shanosky signed with the Richmond Kickers on Friday. Shanosky’s last appearance was on Aug. 10 during Louisville’s 1-1 draw against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Looking ahead to next Saturday at Slugger Field, Shanosky and the Kickers will be heading to Louisville.
