PITTSBURGH – Corey Hertzog continued his stellar run of form with a goal and an assist to Kevin Kerr as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds defeated Bethlehem Steel FC 2-1 on Saturday at Highmark Stadium. Kerr’s 62nd-minute tally served as the winner. Bethlehem’s Cory Burke found the back of the net 10 minutes after Hertzog’s opening tally. With the win, the Riverhounds improved to 3-8-1 at home after losing their previous four home matches. Pittsburgh is now 4-14-4 overall with 16 points. Bethlehem falls to 6-9-8 (26 points) overall and 2-5-4 on the road. The Steel are now winless in five straight (0-3-2) as Saturday’s game kicked off a four-game road trip. This marked the second of three regular-season matches between the Pennsylvania sides. The Steel earned a 2-0 victory against Pittsburgh on July 10 at Goodman Stadium. The series finale features a return to Bethlehem on Sept. 18.

Scoring:
18’ – PGH – Corey Hertzog (Danny Earls)
28’ – BST – Cory Burke
62’ – PGH – Kevin Kerr (Corey Hertzog)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Riverhounds captain Kevin Kerr and the Riverhounds showcased some strong interplay during Kerr’s 62nd-minute tally. Kerr utilized the services of Marshall Hollingsworth to his left and then Corey Hertzog to his right to push through Bethlehem’s defense. Kerr then slotted home the shot for his fourth goal of the season.

  • 2. The host side got things going shortly after a corner kick on the right side, with Corey Hertzog continuing his strong scoring form. Danny Earls provided a left-footed cross that curled toward the edge of the six-yard area and Hertzog headed it inside the left of the frame for a 1-0 lead. For Hertzog, it marked his ninth goal of the season. He has now scored in four consecutive matches, a new season high after posting a three-game goal-scoring run earlier in the season as he has tallied in bunches like many strikers do.

  • 3. The Riverhounds saw the debut of goalkeeper Zack Steffen, a loanee from Columbus Crew SC with extensive international experience, particularly with the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team as a part of the 2013 and 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup squads. While he did allow the first-half tally to Cory Burke in the 28th minute, Steffen was only tested a couple other times during the match as he notched a victory in his debut.
