The countdown of the Top 5 in the USL 20 Under 20 series kicks off with a standout midfielder who has made the move from the New York Red Bulls Academy, to becoming the first signing in Red Bulls II history, to becoming a Homegrown Player for the club’s MLS side before turning 18 years old.

No. 5: Tyler Adams, New York Red Bulls II

Four years after joining the New York Red Bulls Academy, Adams made history in becoming the first signing in Red Bulls II history, and has quickly shown in the USL the potential he has to feature prominently in MLS in the future, and maybe even more after competing last year for the U.S. U17 National Team at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup.

Adams has made 23 regular-season appearances for the Red Bulls II since the start of last season, and this year has been a major factor in the club’s continued rise up the USL standings. Adams also made his first, but likely not his last, appearance in the Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game a week ago. After making his MLS debut earlier this year, most around the Red Bulls camp believe there’s a very bright future ahead.

TopDrawerSoccer.com Scouting Report
The promising prospect of the Red Bulls Academy is one of the youngest players on this list. At just 17 years old, Adams has a bright future ahead of him, but he is already making his mark in the present. Adams made his MLS debut this season against the San Jose Earthquakes in an impressive showing for the teenager. Adams featured as a defender with the Youth National Teams, but he has the tools to play as a defensive midfielder at the professional level. Adams has the potential to be one of the top players in the U.S. Soccer system for a long time, but he needs games in the immediate term, which is why he has starred with the New York Red Bulls II in the USL as he hones his craft while learning from the likes of Dax McCarty and Sacha Kljestan.
