IRVINE, Calif. – Seven days after having its playoff hopes put on life support by a heavy defeat on the road against the Swope Park Rangers, Orange County Blues FC resuscitated its chance to advance to the Western Conference playoffs for a second consecutive season with a 2-0 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at Anteater Stadium.

Led by Trinidad & Tobago international Trevin Caesar, who bagged both goals, the Blues moved back into ninth place in the USL’s Western Conference with the win. The side sits two points back of eighth-place Saint Louis FC, with 10 games to go in the season.

“Great team performance in front of a fantastic home crowd,” said Coach Oliver Wyss. “We will take a lot of confidence from this win and are looking forward to building on it as we push for a playoff spot.”

With a good crowd on hand to see the latest edition of the I-405 Derby, the Galaxy II had the better of possession for much of the game. Unlike the previous week, however, the Blues defense did well to limit Los Dos’ clear looks on goal.

Instead, the Blues took advantage of what opportunities they had. Caesar struck first in the 19th minute as he beat the Galaxy II back line to get onto a pass by Christopher Santana, cut past LA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and calmly finished into the open net.

Caesar’s fifth goal in as many games arrived around the hour-mark, as he stole possession from a Galaxy II defender 35 yards from goal. Caesar drove into the right channel, and fired a low shot from the top of the penalty area that snuck inside the right post to give the Blues an insurance goal.

The Blues head back on the road in midweek to take on a last-place Tulsa Roughnecks FC side that put a dent in Arizona United SC’s playoff hopes on Saturday night with a 2-1 victory. With wins at a premium, the pressure remains on Orange County to keep taking victory, but after being buoyed by victory against its local rival, the Blues appear up for the challenge.

“We knew we weren’t going to play the prettiest soccer, but we knew that we just had to grind and get it,” said Blues midfielder Matt Sheldon following the game. “We had Trevin finish two great goals, and the whole time we were just locked in and really focused today. That’s what I thought the difference was today, just focus.”
