KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Swope Park Rangers tallied twice in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory against San Antonio FC at Children’s Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village. Michael Reed had given San Antonio a lead in the first half, but Swope responded with goals from Dane Kelly and then Mark Anthony Gonzalez. They played to a 1-1 draw on April 9 at Toyota Field. They will play a third and final time during the regular season on Aug. 31 at Swope Soccer Village. Swope improves to 8-8-4 (28 points) overall and 6-3-0 at home. San Antonio drops to 6-7-6 (24 points) overall and 2-3-4 on the road.

Scoring:
30’ – SA – Michael Reed (Danny Garcia)
71’ – SPR – Dane Kelly (Ayrton)
84’ – SPR – Mark Anthony Gonzalez

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Swope’s bench found the equalizer, with USL all-time scoring leader Dane Kelly capping things off in the 71st minute. Brazilian midfielder Ayrton showed some poise with his play from the right side with a little hesitation before delivering a left-footed cross to Kelly. He rose up with the header that clipped the underside of the crossbar and over the goal line to tie the score at 1-1. Kelly has three goals this season and Ayrton notched his third assist. Then it was Mark Anthony Gonzalez who was just in the right place at the right time for a rebound goal in the 84th minute as Swope pressed heavily down the stretch.

  • 2. SAFC’s Michael Reed, wearing the captain’s armband, stepped up in his role with a quick turn to beat Swope Park goalkeeper Zac Lubin at the near post in the 30th minute for a 1-0 lead. SAFC fought for the ball in the right corner and the ball popped out to Danny Garcia, who slotted it quickly to Reed. It was the type of goal that almost came out of nowhere as Lubin could not come up with a low save at the near left post.

  • 3. For San Antonio, the club started a three-game road trip on Saturday. As far as quirky statistics go, SAFC had conceded exactly one goal in seven consecutive road matches heading in. Saturday marked just the second time that SAFC had not allowed that total. The other was a 3-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on April 3 at Starfire Stadium to open the season.
