EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC President Bert Garcia said on Wednesday the new stadium naming-rights partnership with San Antonio-based supermarket chain H-E-B was a clear sign as to the club’s direction as it battles for a playoff position on the field in its inaugural season in the USL.

“I am not sure there is a bigger brand that represents Texas as HEB does,” Garcia said in a wide-ranging Q&A with dynamotheory.com’s Carson Merk. “Therefore, to have opportunity with a partner of that caliber, is a reflection of where our organization is headed. HEB is seen all over our community and the impact it will have branding RGV FC Toros is invaluable. We are excited because we believe this is a giant step in many more great things to come.”

While the timeline for the Toros to move into their new 9,700-seat stadium is not yet confirmed, Garcia said the hope remained the facility would host games this season. More important to the Toros organization, though, was that everything be right for when fans walk through the turnstiles for the first time.

“I believe what is even more important is that we do things the right way,” Garcia said. “As I mentioned before, we cannot focus on this season, but 10, 15, or 20 seasons from now.”

As it stands, though, RGVFC has still developed a strong following in its inaugural season, with Garcia grateful for what he has experienced so far this year at the Toros’ home games.

“The fan support has been amazing,” Garcia said. “The environment they bring to every game is exciting. We couldn’t ask for more. They have been patient with our construction delays, but they see their home being built right in front of them, and that has given them extra motivation.”

The Toros currently sit in sixth position in the Western Conference standings, four points clear of ninth-place San Antonio FC in the race for the USL Playoffs. Garcia has been delighted with the way in which the Toros’ young squad has performed, and the manner in which the partnership between the club and the Dynamo has thrived in its first year.

“Incredibly happy will not sum it up,” Garcia said. “The affiliation is the biggest reason we have had the success we do. Not only for the players they have provided, but the knowledge they provide on and off the pitch is invaluable.

“Needless to say, the Valley is proud of the product that the Houston Dynamo and Wilmer Cabrera have produced.”
