SANDY, Utah – Real Monarchs SLC midfielder Elder Torres has been named to the Honduras U-23 National Team for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Torres joined the Olympic team for pre-tournament friendlies earlier this month and will be on the roster when Honduras starts the tournament in August.

“We’re excited for him,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said. “This is great for our club to have a player come and continue his development and get called in for such an important event on the world’s stage.”

Torres, 21, joined the Monarchs on loan from CD Social Vida in his native Honduras prior to the start of the 2016 USL season. He has one goal and two assists in 12 appearances this year for the club, which is currently tied for ninth in the Western Conference at 6-9-4 (22pts).

Honduras finished second in Olympic qualifying in October and will face Algeria (August 4), Portugal (August 7) and Argentina (August 10) in the Group Stage. Honduras has qualified in three of the past four Olympic tournaments, and reached the quarterfinals in London in 2012.
