SAN ANTONIO – The LA Galaxy II overcame an early deficit to take a fourth consecutive win as they held on late for a 3-2 victory against San Antonio FC in front of 7,690 fans at Toyota Field. San Antonio sprang out to an early lead when Rafael Castillo blistered home a free kick into the top-right corner of the net in just the third minute, but two minutes later Jaime Villarreal set up brother Jose Villarreal for an immediate reply. Jack McBean then regained the lead in the race for the USL Golden Boot with his 15th goal of the season in the 20th minute as Los Dos took the lead. Jaime Villarreal added a third 15 minutes later, as he finished off a clever passing move that played Josh Turnley in down the left for a low cross. San Antonio pressed to cut into the deficit, and made it a one-goal game with seven minutes to go when John McCarthy scored off the rebound after Galaxy II goalkeeper Clement Diop saved an effort from a free kick, but the hosts’ six-game undefeated streak came to an end as Los Dos held on for victory.

Scoring:
3’ – SA – Rafael Castillo
5’ – LA – Jose Villarreal (Jaime Villarreal)
20’ – LA – Jack McBean
35’ – LA – Jaime Villarreal (Josh Turnley)
83’ – SA – John McCarthy

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. A fourth consecutive victory moved the Galaxy II back to the top of the Western Conference, at least for tonight, but as with their win last Saturday against Portland, it was the manner in which Los Dos took the game to their hosts that was most impressive. After falling behind to a great opening goal by SAFC, the Galaxy II turned on the style, most notably on Jaime Villarreal’s third goal that saw the San Antonio defense get split open for a simple finish.

  • 2. San Antonio knew coming in the Galaxy II would prove the biggest test they had faced in continuing their undefeated streak, and the side will likely take a few lessons away from Saturday night’s game that they’ll carry forward in the pursuit of a place in the playoffs. San Antonio remains right in the mix for a playoff place, but next Saturday’s game on the road against the Swope Park Rangers just got that much bigger for Coach Darren Powell’s side.

  • 3. Jack McBean continued his outstanding season for the Galaxy II on Saturday night with his league-leading 15th goal of the season, and now he’ll get the chance to get onto the big stage on Wednesday night in the MLS Chipotle Homegrown Game at Avaya Stadium in San Jose. A recent returnee to the Galaxy’s MLS squad, McBean is one of the better stories in not just the USL this season, but American soccer as a whole.
