WILMINGTON, N.C. – Eastern Conference-leading Louisville City FC, which had scored a combined three goals in its previous three games, broke things open Sunday with a 4-1 victory against Wilmington Hammerheads FC on Sunday at Legion Stadium. Chandler Hoffman led the way with two second-half goals, while Guy Abend and Aodhan Quinn added a goal apiece as Louisville continues its unbeaten performance on the road this season, improving to 8-0-2 and extending its road winning streak to four games. Overall, Louisville improves to 12-1-6 (42 points), four points ahead of the New York Red Bulls II. City’s unbeaten streak has now reached 17 games. Wilmington falls to 6-7-5 (23 points) overall and 3-3-3 at home. Bruno Perone converted a PK in the waning minutes for the Hammerheads.

Scoring:
12’ – LOU – Guy Abend (Tarek Morad)
64’ – LOU – Chandler Hoffman (penalty)
69’ – LOU – Aodhan Quinn
79’ – LOU – Chandler Hoffman (Kyle Smith)
87’ – WIL – Bruno Perone (penalty)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Chandler Hoffman continued his stellar season with a pair of second-half goals, first converting a 64th-minute penalty kick with a low shot into the left of the frame and then finding plenty of open space in the 79th minute as Kyle Smith set up his near right-post tally. Hoffman now has 14 goals on the season in 18 games, tied for the league lead with the LA Galaxy II’s Jack McBean. Hoffman also eclipsed the 30-goal mark for his USL career, moving to 31 overall.

  • 2. Louisville created the brunt of the chances in the early minutes, gaining a couple of set piece opportunities in the process. City struck first in the 12th minute on the back end of a corner kick sequence. George Davis IV had the initial attempt and Hammerheads goalkeeper Eric Ati made the diving save to the near left post. The ball was still up for grabs following Ati’s stop, and Tarek Morad crossed back in from the left to connect with Guy Abend for the header and a 1-0 lead. Abend scored his third goal of the season and Morad earned his second assist. Morad’s night was short, however, as Conor Shanosky replaced him in the 28th minute. In another set piece chance, Aodhan Quinn struck a beautiful free kick inside the right post in the 69th minute to give Louisville a 3-0 lead at the time.

  • 3. The Hammerheads were able to find a consolation tally down the stretch as Bruno Perone scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 89rth minute, converting a penalty kick. Wilmington didn’t have too many scoring chances, though the Hammerheads had the best opportunity to take a lead in just the fifth minute with a run down the light side. Austin Martz’s shot was out of reach of Louisville goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh and caromed off of the left post. Justin Moose kept the pressure on with a rebound from the right side of the box but his shot rose over the crossbar as Wilmington missed a good opportunity to gain the early advantage.
