League’s top scorer McBean leads 16 current and former players named in squad

SAN JOSE, Calif. – USL leading scorer Jack McBean of the LA Galaxy II will head a contingent of 16 of the league’s current and former players at the 2016 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game this month, revealed on Tuesday afternoon by Coach Landon Donovan.

McBean, who less than a month ago signed with the Galaxy as a Homegrown Player, is joined by fellow young standouts Tommy Thompson (Sacramento Republic FC), Coy Craft (OKC Energy FC), Tyler Turner (Orlando City B) and Maxime Crepeau (FC Montreal) in the squad that will face the Mexico U20 National Team at Avaya Stadium on July 27.

“It’s cool. I’m super excited to get the opportunity to play and I’m thankful to Landon for making the team. I’m looking forward to playing for him, it’s a huge honor,” McBean said following Galaxy practice on Tuesday. “It’ll be fun [to play for Landon]. He was one of my mentors when I was a younger player and I’ll go in there and try and score a goal for him.”

McBean leads the USL with 13 goals this season, as the Galaxy II have followed their USL Western Conference Championship a season ago with another strong regular season. Teammate Raul Mendiola, who has recorded 17 assists in 50 appearances all-time for Los Dos was also named in the squad.

Thompson and Craft are set to join McBean in the Homegrown attack, with Thompson having competed each of the past three seasons for Republic FC on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes. Thompson was named the USL Player of the Week on May 17, and has recorded two goals in seven appearances for Republic FC this season.

Craft scored his first professional goal for Energy FC on April 9 against Saint Louis FC, and has notched two goals and one assist for the side in nine games this season on loan from FC Dallas.

Turner, meanwhile, has continued to shine for Orlando City B this season after being named a finalist for the USL Rookie of the Year award two years ago. Turner has scored three goals and added one assist in 14 appearances for OCB this season, while fellow selection Harrison Heath has also notched a goal in his six appearances for the Lions. Heath made his professional debut for the Lions in 2014 when they were a member of the USL before joining Major League Soccer.

Crepeau, meanwhile, has built on his first full international appearance for Canada with another stellar season for FC Montreal. The 22-year-old has recorded 94 saves in 24 appearances for the side, good for a save percentage of .706, highlighting the Montreal Impact youngster’s outstanding potential.

Also named to the squad is Tyler Adams, who was the first signing in New York Red Bulls II history in 2015 before signing with the Red Bulls as a HGP this winter.

The third annual MLS Chipotle Homegrown Game will be held as part of MLS All-Star Week in San Jose, Calif., with kickoff at Avaya Stadium set for 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 27.
