TUKWILA, Wash. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 took advantage of a man advantage as Victor Mansaray tallied an 86th-minute winner to lift S2 to a 2-1 victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Sunday at Starfire Stadium. With the score tied at 1-1, Colorado Rapids loanee Joe Greenspan picked up a second yellow card for the Switchbacks in the 70th minute and was subsequently sent off as the visitors played the remaining 20 minutes down a man. Myron Samuel set up Mansaray with the through ball and Mansaray fired to the upper left corner of the frame for the winner. The Switchbacks had been in a spot to potentially move into second place in the Western Conference standings holding onto a lead thanks to a Mike Seth tally. Darwin Jones found an equalizer in the 60th minute and S2 would complete its rally on the Mansaray goal to put an end to a three-game winless streak. Seattle improved to 4-11-2 (14 points) overall and 3-5-3 at home. Colorado Springs fell to 8-5-3 (27 points) overall and 3-4-2 on the road. S2 has won both matches against the Switchbacks this season, previously earning a 1-0 win on April 17. They will face each other one more time on Sept. 17 at Switchbacks Stadium.

Scoring:
27’ – COS – Mike Seth (Luke Vercollone)
60’ – SEA – Darwin Jones (Jordan Schweitzer)
86’ – SEA – Victor Mansaray (Myron Samuel)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Seattle had scored only twice in its previous three matches during a 0-2-1 stretch, but the offense finally broke through late against Colorado Springs. Victor Mansaray moved ahead of Andy Craven to hold the team lead in goals with four this season, while Myron Samuel leads the club with four assists this season.

  • 2. Much of the first half was open play, but the game’s opening goal came off of a throw-in. From the right sideline, Christian Ibeagha connected with Mike Seth who fronted his defender to flick the ball toward the six-yard area and Luke Vercollone. Vercollone headed it back to Seth who dropped a few yards back after his flick and then slotted his shot inside the right post past S2 goalkeeper Tyler Miller for a 1-0 lead. Seth notched his fourth goal of the season and Vercollone tallied his third assist of the year.

  • 3. S2 was in need of a pick-me-up moment and the club responded well in the 60th minute with Darwin Jones’ first tally of the season. Jordan Schweitzer took a shot from outside the box that was going to head wide left of the frame, but he placed it in a perfect spot for Jones who redirected it into the net past Switchbacks goalkeeper Billy Thompson to tie the score at 1-1. It was a long-awaited goal for Jones, who entered the match having taken 11 shots but struggling to put much on frame this year.
