SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC and OKC Energy FC played to a scoreless draw on Saturday in front of a crowd of 5,855 at Toyota Field. In a chippy match for both sides, they also played the remaining 22 minutes and stoppage time with 10 men each as San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford and OKC’s Michael Thomas – the team captains for both clubs – were sent off. This is the second consecutive draw between the two Western Conference clubs, having played to a 1-1 draw on May 15 at Taft Stadium. Though San Antonio saw its three-game winning streak come to a close, the host side did extend its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2). SAFC is now 5-5-6 (21 points) overall and 3-2-3 at home. Energy FC moves to 5-2-7 (22 points) overall and 3-1-3 on the road. This is OKC’s second straight scoreless draw, having posted a 0-0 draw against Rio Grande Valley FC on July 2.

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. OKC’s offense was shut out for the fourth time this season, posting its third 0-0 draw of the season. The other two matches were against RGV on July 2 and at Arizona United SC on May 7. San Antonio’s offense was held scoreless for the sixth time this season.

  • 2. A game-changing moment for both teams occurred in the 68th minute on a 50-50 ball as Energy FC’s Danni Konig and SAFC goalkeeper Josh Ford collided at the edge of the six-yard area. After Ford batted the ball away, shoves ensued, with Ford taking exception to being bumped by Konig on that play and both benches cleared. Ford and OKC’s Michael Thomas were both sent off. Matt Cardone entered the match to take the place of Ford in net, making just his second appearance of the season.

  • 3. Both sides endured sequences where an attacking player fell down in the box, but play went on. The first instance was in the 35th minute when SAFC’s Jason Johnson pleaded for a penalty kick call as he went down to ground at the edge of the six. Carlos Alvarez crossed the ball in from the left, looking to connect with Johnson who was battling for inside position with OKC’s Kyle Hyland. As the ball neared the six-yard area, Johnson hit the surface and it was ruled that no foul occurred during the sequence. A similar sequence occurred for OKC when Sebastian Dalgaard felt he was bumped by San Antonio’s Milton Palacios in the 66th minute, and once again play moved on as both sides were still searching for a goal.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
Cody Laurendi, OKC Energy FC - Laurendi posted his fifth clean sheet of the season and his second consecutive, coming up with two stops and intervening on a number of crosses and buildups as SAFC was the more active squad on the offensive end Saturday night.
