The volume of the USL teams’ goal-scoring during the Second Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup marked a new peak for several clubs who advanced in the tournament with some record-shattering numbers.

Three sides posted a single-game record for goals during Wednesday’s matches to move on to the Third Round on June 1.

Leading the charge were the defending USL champion Rochester Rhinos who bounced Southie FC 7-0 at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. That seven-goal effort, led by Asani Samuels’ hat trick, topped the organization’s previous high of five goals during the 2006 U.S. Open Cup, when the then-named Raging Rhinos defeated the New Hampshire Phantoms 5-1 on July 12 of that year.

With Rhinos Head Coach Bob Lilley fielding a side with only a few of the regular starters in the lineup, that makes Wednesday’s showing even more impressive.

“We came out strong and we put them away early,” midfielder Marcos Ugarte told the Democrat and Chronicle’s Jeff DiVeronica. “Only me, Asani and [Christian] Volesky were the only returners in the starting lineup, so it was our job to carry these guys.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC also changed its Open Cup record books with a dominating 6-0 victory against the NPSL’s Miami Fusion, with Austin Martz and Kyle Parker recording braces. The Hammerheads’ previous goal-scoring high was four, set two previous times – a 4-0 win against the Central Florida Kraze on June 14, 2011, and a 4-1 victory against MLS’s Dallas Burn in the Fourth Round on Aug. 6, 2003.

The Second Round nightcap featured a confidence performance from Arizona United SC, which cruised past the PDL’s FC Tucson 5-0 on the road. Long Tan led the way with two goals, including one shorthanded in the second half. Arizona’s previous best offensive output was a 3-2 win against the PDL’s Portland Timbers U23s on May 13, 2014.

“The finishing was excellent tonight,” United SC Head Coach Frank Yallop said after the match. “I think we had about 10 chances and scored five goals. So from a coaching side of it, efficiency was great.”

Though not a team record in the tournament, Sacramento Republic FC’s offense was impressive en route to a 5-0 victory against CD Aguiluchos USA. Five different players scored a goal, including Max Alvarez who assisted two other tallies. The five goals rank second to the club’s 6-0 win against the PDL’s Fresno Fuego in 2014.

For the 13 USL teams that advanced to the Third Round, they outscored their opponents by an extraordinary 40-3 margin, with nine shutout victories.

Beyond the heavy goal-scoring, Wednesday marked a banner day for two expansion clubs as FC Cincinnati and San Antonio FC both won their first Open Cup matches in their organizations’ young history. For Cincinnati, Omar Cummings tallied the club’s first Open Cup goal, converting a penalty kick in the 36th minute as the side would eventually top Indy Eleven NPSL 2-1. San Antonio’s Jason Johnson needed just three minutes to tally his club’s first Open Cup goal during a 3-1 victory against the NPSL’s Corinthians FC of San Antonio.
